Warangal: A Vanamahotsav (tree-planting festival) program was grandly organized at the campus of The Hyderabad Public School, Warangal, under the slogan “Ek Ped – Maa Ke Naam” (A Tree in the Name of Mother). The event was conducted by the Orugallu Wildlife Society (OWLS) in coordination with the school management; several voluntary organizations participated and supported the initiative by bringing large saplings—including fruit-bearing, shade-providing, and high-oxygen-producing varieties. OWLS members supervised the scientific planting of these large saplings, procured from the Forest Department, within the school premises. Students were given practical demonstrations on the correct methods of planting and caring for the saplings.

Speaking at the event, OWLS General Secretary Shyam Sundar Sharma emphasized that students should cultivate the habit of planting trees from a young age, noting that trees help maintain biodiversity and ecological balance. OWLS Founding President Indaram Nageshwar Rao urged everyone to plant a sapling on occasions like the birthdays of parents, friends, or themselves to contribute to environmental well-being. He remarked that trees are akin to mothers and called upon everyone to put the “Ek Ped – Maa Ke Naam” concept into practice.

On this occasion, a handbook titled “Birds of Telangana” was released by the school principal, Mrs. Saritha Reddy, and distributed to 50 students to foster awareness about birdlife. Renowned environmentalist Pittala Ravibabu stated that the Earth is gripped by global warming and pollution, making it our duty to protect it; he highlighted that safeguarding nature, the environment, forests, wildlife, and natural resources is a fundamental duty of every citizen under Article 51A(g) of the Indian Constitution. He educated students on the importance of not overusing natural resources, warning that failing to conserve them would jeopardize the future of the ecosystem.

Venkatesh Chakram, a representative of the prominent international voluntary organization ‘MARI’, spoke about how trees are essential for survival and noted that we ourselves are responsible for deforestation and the resulting ecological imbalances; he urged students to grasp this reality and spread environmental awareness among their parents. Principal Smt. Saritha Reddy emphasized that planting trees responsibly is crucial for a sustainable future and noted that the school instills awareness about environmental conservation in students from a young age. Representatives from various voluntary organizations were honored with shawls and mementos. As part of the event, students, teachers, and representatives from voluntary organizations planted saplings, watered them, and pledged to care for them. Coordinator and Art Teacher Srinivas played a key role in organizing the event, which saw enthusiastic participation from teachers, students, and school staff, making the ‘Vanamahotsavam’ (Tree Plantation Festival) a success.
